BATS AINT FOR BASEBALL: THE LOCKJAW STORY

When did you start playing guitar? How did you get into punk?
Thanks for the support of Lockjaw, I grew up in Lake Oswego Or. and started playing guitar at 16. I was a big Kiss freak and stoner in 1976. I read about the Sex Pistols in the Rolling stone. We had a record store in town and this guy Dave Hite worked there and turned me onto the Dead Boys, Ramones and the Sex Pistols. I was the only kid in high school that was into punk.

Was Lockjaw your first band? How did Lockjaw start? What was the Portland scene like at the time?
I went into Portland to see a few shows such as the Wipers and Sado Nation and fucking loved the scene. After highschool I went to PCC (Portland community college) and met Eric who I had seen at a few shows. We formed THE EATERS and played our first show was with SADO NATION, IMPERIALIST PIGS AND POISON IDEA. Back then in 1980 every one spit on you. We were covered head to toe in spit and snot. We broke up that year when our singer robbed someone at gun point. We found Tony, fresh from New York and Rob Parker on drums, Lockjaw was born.

All the info I can find on Lockjaw is "Lockjaw was ripped by the media, protested, and a couple of local record stores destroyed all the band's records. The band was accused of being nazis and white power racists, but it was all hysteria, rumor, and of course not true". What can you say about Lockjaw's reputation?
We released Shock Value in 1982. It was the first punk EP to have 8 songs at 45rpm. It had the song "Go Back" that was done in the Meatmen vein but everyone thought we were racist for it and we said fuck it and played up on it. We liked being hated. We liked fighting, drinking and gun play. The punk scene was not one big happy family but all the hardcore bands got along good.

After DEAD FRIENDS came out Rob quit the band and we found Garret and Jeremy. Me and Garret were Skinheads and the bad boy rep got bigger and thats when we said 'Drink hard kick and beat and thrash their is nothing we like more than to kick some rockers ass'.

Also, why was your full length 'Gang Violence' never released? Why did you break up? What bands did you play with?

Gang violence lp we recorded when we knew we were going to break up. Garret was going to play football for OLE MISS and we wanted to record that stuff so as to not to lose it.

The bands we played with were many, to name a few: AGNOSTIC FRONT,EXPLOITED,DISCHARGE, GBH,SUICIDAL TENDENCIES,REALLY RED,BAD BRAINS,JFA,BLACK FLAG,VICE SQUAD.
